Solbåten av Christian Berg
The "Solbåten" (Sun Boat) is an abstract sculpture located on Evert Taube's terrace at Riddarholmen in Stockholm, created by the artist Christian Berg.
The Sun Boat consists of a light "sail" on a pedestal made of granite. Christian Berg is said to have been inspired by a shell he found on an island in the Aegean Sea, but boats and sails are also believed to have influenced him. The sculpture was erected in 1966 on Evert Taube’s terrace.
The stone block of the sculpture came from Idefjord and initially weighed 16 tons. Regarding the Sun Boat, Berg said: "It is a mother-of-pearl shimmering shell form I am working with, transforming it into something I call a sun boat, which in its wind-filled sail form reflects the sun and the light above, and which, despite its static form, aims to give a vision of progress. A Nike triumphing over matter."
