Bastugatan
Bastugatan (English: Sauna Street) is a historic cobblestone street located on Södermalm, Stockholm, running approximately 720 metres in an east–west direction along the slope of Mariaberget, between Södermälarstrand and Hornsgatan. The street is first mentioned in a will dating from 1602 and is considered the oldest surviving street name on Södermalm, taking its name from the bathhouses (badstugor) that once stood by the water below Mariaberget. The street is characterised by well-preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture, with ornate building facades typical of the area. A notable landmark connected to Bastugatan is Mariahissen, a neo-Gothic elevator building constructed in 1885 and designed by architect Gustaf Dahl, which once carried up to three thousand passengers daily between Mariaberget and the southern shore of Riddarfjärden. Today, Bastugatan is admired for its historic charm and scenic views over Stockholm.
