Demokrativerkstaden, Gråmunkegränd
Demokrativerkstaden (Swedish: The Democracy Workshop) is an educational facility operated by the Swedish Parliament (Riksdagen), located at Stora Gråmunkegränd 4 in Gamla Stan, Stockholm. It is housed in a historically listed building dating from the late 19th century, renovated and reopened in 2024.
The facility is designed for secondary school students in years 7–9. Visiting classes take part in a structured role-play exercise in which pupils act as members of parliament, divided into fictional parties. They work through the Swedish legislative process — including party meetings, committee sessions, and a chamber vote — debating topics such as climate policy and gene editing.
Sessions last approximately one hour and 45 minutes and accommodate groups of 10 to 35 participants. A classroom version of the programme is also available for schools unable to travel to Stockholm. The facility is fully accessible and managed by the Riksdag Administration.
