Sunset at Brännkyrkagatan
Around number 20, Brännkyrkagatan reveals one of Stockholm's most unusual urban quirks. The street dramatically splits into two levels, with one carriageway sitting noticeably higher than the other, separated by a raw outcrop of bare rock rising directly from the street itself. This exposed bedrock, the same ancient Stockholm granite that underlies the entire city, simply refused to be tamed during the street's development, and so the road was built around it rather than through it. The result is a strikingly peculiar piece of streetscape, where nature and city infrastructure coexist in an almost theatrical way. It is a small but memorable reminder that Stockholm was always built on, and around, its geology.
