Mariahissen
Mariahissen is a distinctive and historically fascinating building on Södermalm, taking its name from the public elevator — "hissen" meaning lift in Swedish — that once connected the hillside neighbourhood of Maria Magdalena parish to the lower streets below. The imposing structure sits dramatically on the steep Södermalm escarpment, commanding sweeping views over Riddarfjärden and the Stockholm skyline. Built in the early 20th century, the building reflects the grand civic ambition of that era, when Södermalm was being transformed from a working-class district into a more developed urban quarter. Today Mariahissen remains a striking landmark, its bold presence on the cliff edge making it instantly recognisable from the water and from Kungsholmen across the bay.
