Old town, Stockholm
Gamla Stan (The Old Town), known officially until 1980 as Staden mellan broarna (“The Town between the Bridges”), is the historic heart of Stockholm, Sweden. It is centered mainly on the island of Stadsholmen and also encompasses the nearby islets of Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen, and Strömsborg. The district is home to roughly 3,000 residents.
Throughout Swedish architectural history, Gamla Stan has held significant importance. Many of the country’s most celebrated architects have left their mark there, including Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and Carl Hårleman, both of whom contributed to the design of Stockholm Palace, which still stands in the area today.
