Vem är Mr Walker? - Who is Mr Walker?
Vem är Mr Walker? (English: Who is Mr Walker?) is a public sculpture located in Järnvägsparken, a small park situated between Stockholm Central Station and the Sheraton Stockholm Hotel in the Norrmalm district. The work was created by prominent Swedish artist Jan Håfström and unveiled on 5 September 2014. Standing seven metres tall and weighing nearly 2,000 kilograms, the sculpture is fabricated from painted aluminium and depicts a striding male figure wearing a long coat and hat. Its ingenious construction consists of two silhouette panels joined together, producing an unexpected three-dimensional dynamism: the figure appears simultaneously to run and to fall depending on the viewer's angle of approach, one side rendered in red and the other in blue.
The work draws on Håfström's longstanding artistic fascination with Mr Walker, the civilian alias of the comic strip hero the Phantom, created by Lee Falk. The figure also carries a deeply personal significance for the artist, whose own father bore a resemblance to the hatted, coat-wearing silhouette. The sculpture was commissioned by Stockholm Konst as part of an initiative to activate overlooked public spaces across the city, and is considered one of central Stockholm's most playful and thought-provoking pieces of public art.
