Sunset at Mariaberget
Mariaberget (Swedish: Mary's Mountain) is a hillside viewpoint and historic neighbourhood situated on the northern edge of Södermalm in Stockholm, Sweden. It takes its name from the nearby Maria Magdalena Church, one of the oldest churches on the island.
The viewpoint is accessed via Monteliusvägen, a cliffside pathway lined with well-preserved 18th-century wooden houses, cobblestone surfaces, and period street lamps. From the observation platform, visitors have an unobstructed panoramic view across Riddarfjärden Bay towards Gamla Stan, Kungsholmen, and Stockholm City Hall. The area narrowly escaped large-scale demolition during urban redevelopment proposals in the 1960s, and its historic streetscape has since been protected.
Mariaberget is freely accessible year-round and around the clock. It is widely regarded as one of Stockholm's finest vantage points, particularly popular among photographers during sunrise and sunset hours.
