Colombo Lighthouse Galbokka Point, 1979

The Colombo Lighthouse, located at Galbokka Point near the Port of Colombo, was built in 1952 after the old lighthouse was decommissioned due to obstruction from nearby buildings. The 29-meter-high lighthouse is a city landmark offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. It features four lion statues at its base and is situated in a high-security zone, restricting public access. The lighthouse is home to a naval gun battery used by the Sri Lanka Navy for traditional gun salutes, particularly on National Day (February 4). Originally, QF 4-inch naval guns were used for the salutes, and later, 52 mm guns were installed. In 2021, the salute tradition was moved to naval ships due to the lighthouse's landlocked position.
