Cargills (Ceylon) Limited building, Colombo Fort, 1979
The Cargills building in Colombo Fort was originally the home of Captain Pieter Sluysken, the Dutch military commander of Galle. It was later occupied by Sir Frederick North, the first British Governor of Ceylon, before he moved to a larger villa in Hulftsdorp. In 1896, Cargills acquired the property, with D.S. Cargill as Chairman and Walter Hamilton as Director. The current building, designed by Edward Skinner and constructed by Walker Sons and Company, began in 1902 and was completed in 1906. A foundation stone from 1684 and a statue of Minerva, both from Sluysken's house, are displayed in the lobby. Cargills became a public company in 1946.
