In October 1953, Greta Garbo bought a seven-room apartment on the fifth floor of The Campanile at 450 East 52nd Street, New York. She struggled to secure the apartment, admitting to a friend that the building’s residents weren’t fond of actresses. However, her friends, George and Valentina Schlee, who lived on the ninth floor, may have helped her get in.
The apartment’s location was perfect for Garbo, at the end of a quiet Manhattan cul-de-sac with unobstructed views of the East River. The building, a cooperative with 16 apartments, had a storied history of colorful residents. Garbo enjoyed being centrally located, with nearby access to shops, museums, and Central Park.
