USS Intrepid (CV 11) from Hudson River Greenway
USS Intrepid (CV/CVA/CVS-11), also known as "The Fighting I," is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Commissioned in August 1943, she participated in several key Pacific battles, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. After being decommissioned at the war's end, *Intrepid* was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier, later converting to an antisubmarine carrier. Serving primarily in the Atlantic, she also played a role in the Vietnam War and recovered Mercury and Gemini space missions. After her final decommissioning in 1974, *Intrepid* became a museum ship in 1982, now part of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City.
