The BMW Z1 is the first model in BMW's line of Z series roadsters (two-seater convertibles), and was produced in limited numbers from 1989 to 1991. The Z1 is unique for its plastic body panels and vertically sliding doors which drop into the door sills. It is one of the first BMWs to use a multi-link rear suspension. The sole drivetrain specification is the 2.5-litre straight-six engine and 5-speed manual transmission from the E30 325i.

Based on the 1986 model year E30 3 Series, the M3 was only available in coupe and convertible body styles. The E30 M3 used the BMW S14 inline-4 engine. The first iteration of the engine produced 143 kW; 192 hp (195 PS) with a catalytic converter and 147 kW; 197 hp (200 PS) without a catalytic converter. In September 1989, power was increased to 158 kW; 212 hp (215 PS) with a catalytic converter.
